Why Do Luxury Yachts Get So Big?

This is not to say a yacht is 150 or 180 meters long because someone wants a larger bedroom. The size at this level is derived from accommodation and entertainment space, technical systems, crew spaces, and serious long distance cruising.

There are a number of things that typically take these yachts into record-breaking waters.

• Guest space – Large yachts can have multiple suites, lounges, dining areas and private owner decks.
• Crew requirement – dozens of crew members would be required for this size yacht, requiring separate cabins, kitchens and working areas.
• Entertainments – Swimming pool, cinema, beach club, gym, large outdoor decks all use space.
• Aircraft facilities – Yachts may have one or even two helipads.
• Engineering – Huge internal areas are required for Engines, Generators, Fuel, Water and Stabilization Equipment.

The Yacht That Holds the Record

Azzam was built by Lürssen and delivered in 2013. It’s officially 180.65 meters long, and is supposedly the world’s longest private yacht, according to its builder. The speed is even better. Despite being almost the length of two football fields, Azzam can reach speeds of over 30 knots, says Lürssen.

The yacht was built to meet a specific need – it should be very large, yet be capable of high speed in warm, less-than-deep water.

The exterior was done by Nauta Design and the interior by Christophe Leoni of France. Inside, it is said to be in an Empire style; much of it is still to be made private.

The other surprising fact is the speed of Azzam’s building. From laying up to delivery it took less than three years, says Lürssen, a very short time for a bespoke vessel of this size. 

How Much Does the Biggest Luxury Yacht Cost?

The cost of the construction of Azzam has never been officially disclosed by Lürssen and/or its commissioning owner.

But, the build cost has been reported to be around $600 million to $620 million generally. CNN earlier reported an estimated cost of about $600 million, and contemporary yachting put the cost at about $620 million. These numbers are to be used as guidelines and not an official sale price.

It can be just as difficult to substantiate current values as it can be to confirm past values, because yachts of this type don’t often go under the hammer. The estimate for 2026 yacht-market transactions of Azzam is estimated at some €600 million, but once again, this is an estimate, not a confirmed transaction. 

Is Azzam Really the World’s Biggest Yacht?

It depends on what you mean by “biggest.”

By length among conventional private luxury motor yachts, Azzam remains the main record holder at 180.65 meters.

But another vessel changes the picture.

REV Ocean measures about 195 meters, making it significantly longer than Azzam. REV Ocean describes itself as the world’s largest privately owned research and exploration vessel. Its equipment includes deep-sea robotics, laboratories, a submersible and facilities designed for scientific missions.

Because its primary purpose is ocean research rather than private recreation, many traditional superyacht rankings keep it in a separate category.

There is also Somnio, a planned 222-meter residential yacht currently associated with the very top of future yacht rankings. Since vessels still under construction are not equivalent to delivered operational yachts, Azzam remains the more useful comparison for an existing private luxury yacht.

Biggest Luxury Yacht by Interior Volume

A yacht does not have to be measured in terms of length.

If using gross tonnage, which largely refers to enclosed internal space, then Dilbar is one of the more important yachts ever constructed.

With a length of 156 meters and a gross tonnage of 15,917 GT, Dilbar is a very long vessel. Lürssen refers to it as the world’s biggest motor yacht by gross tonnage.

This large volume provides for unusually large entertainment and recreation space.

The most popular thing about it is a 25 m swimming pool which is capable of holding nearly 180 cubic meters of water. Lürssen says it is the biggest pool ever fitted for a yacht.

So, Azzam is the winner in terms of length on the traditional private yacht, and Dilbar has really been distinguished in terms of interior volume.

Other Giant Luxury Yachts Worth Knowing

Azzam is not alone at the extreme end of the yacht world. Several other yachts are close enough in size to feel more like private ships than recreational boats.

• Eclipse – 162.5 meters: Built by Blohm+Voss, Eclipse was once the world’s longest private yacht before Azzam arrived. It reportedly includes two helicopter pads and extensive accommodation and leisure facilities.
• Dubai – around 162 meters: One of the longest private yachts ever constructed and a regular entry near the top of global superyacht rankings.
• Blue – around 160 meters: Another huge Lürssen-built yacht and one of the shipyard’s largest projects. Lürssen lists it at approximately 160 meters.

• Al Said – 155 meters: Another Lürssen-built giant and one of the largest yachts produced by the German shipyard.
• Opera – 146.35 meters: One of the newer large-scale Lürssen yachts and comfortably within the modern giga-yacht category.

At this size level, a difference of even 10 meters can represent thousands of additional square feet of usable interior and exterior space.

What Is It Like Inside a Yacht This Big?

Still, a 180-meter luxury yacht can contain an amount of space that would be impossible on a normal yacht.

Large vessels in this category may include private owner apartments, several guest suites, formal dining rooms, cinemas, gyms, spas and multiple lounges. Outdoor areas can include swimming pools, sun decks, bars and landing zones for helicopters.

Below deck, there is another world entirely.

Crew accommodation, commercial-grade kitchens, workshops, laundry rooms, storage spaces, engine rooms and technical control centers can occupy huge portions of the vessel.

That is why two yachts with similar lengths can still feel completely different inside.

How Fast Can the Biggest Luxury Yacht Go?

This is another area where Azzam stands out.

Lürssen reports a top speed of more than 30 knots, equal to roughly 35 mph or 56 km/h.

That may not sound particularly quick compared with a car, but at sea it is extremely fast for something measuring more than 180 meters.

Large yachts normally trade speed for efficiency because pushing thousands of tonnes of vessel through water takes enormous amounts of energy.

Azzam was specifically engineered to combine extreme size with relatively high speed. That makes its performance nearly as important as its length record.

So Why Would Someone Build a Yacht This Big?

For owners commissioning yachts at this level, the attraction is rarely just one thing.

Privacy is a major factor. A very large yacht can function as a self-contained residence that moves between destinations while keeping the owner away from hotels and public spaces.

There is also freedom. Helicopters, tenders and support boats make it possible to reach places that are difficult to access from land.

Then there is customization.

Unlike a production yacht, a vessel such as Azzam is designed almost entirely around the requirements of its commissioning client. The layout, propulsion, décor and recreational areas can all be created for one specific use.
