Biggest Luxury Yacht

The biggest luxury yacht in the world is the Eclipse, owned by businessman Roman Abramovich. It is 164 meters or 538 feet long. It was built in 2009 by Blohm + Voss in Germany.

General Characteristics

The Eclipse was commissioned on 2010-12-09. This motor yacht has a tonnage of 13,000 GT and is run by 70 crew members. The exterior and interior were created under the supervision of Terence Disdale Design. Following its construction, the yacht was finished on December 9, 2010.

After it was built, the Eclipse surpassed the Dubai and became the biggest luxury yacht in the world. The Dubai is 162 meters / 531 feet long. The Dubai is owned by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It was constructed by Blohm + Voss and Lurssen.

The Eclipse cost 800 million Euros to build. This is equal to $1.2 billion. The estimate was significantly higher than the original estimate of 340 million Euros or $485 million.

Features

The yacht has several features. It has a disco hall, numerous hot tubs and two dozen guest cabins. The yacht also has two swimming pools built in. Two helicopter pads can be found on the yacht. The vessel also has a small submarine that can go as deep as 50 m. Three beach boats are also included.

The Eclipse has numerous security features built in. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of its security features is the missile defense system. A mechanism for sensing intruders is also included. The windows at the master suite have bullet proof glass. The same is true for the yacht bridge. Both the bridge and master suite have armor plating.

Anti-Paparazzi Device

There are unconfirmed reports the Eclipse has a system for dealing with paparazzi. The system is made up of lasers that monitor the surroundings. When a CCD is found, a light will be focused on the camera. This will make it impossible to take a photograph.

This feature is supposed to be only active if security personnel detect photographers nearby. If the system were always on, it would be impossible for people on the ship to take pictures. Again, it should be emphasized that the existence of this device has not been confirmed.

The biggest luxury yacht in the world had its initial launch on June 12, 2009. Tests were conducted in Frederikshavn, Denmark on September 8, 2009. The first photographs of the Eclipse were taken during its refueling at Kristiansand, Norway.
