This list of the Americas largest metropolitan areas is set on the concept of one urban core and the areas close by. The agglomeration concept is used when the standard metropolitan definition cannot be applied.

At number one is Mexico City with a population of 21,163,222. Number two is Sao Paulo, Brazil with a population of 19,889,559. New York City of the United States is at number three. Its population has been put at 19,069,796. 
 
Buenos Aires, Argentina is at the number four slot. It has a population of 3,074,000. Los Angeles, California is at number five with a population of 12,874,797. 
 
At number six in the list of the Americas largest metropolitan areas is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has a population of 11,529,194. Chicago is at number seven. it has a metro population of 9,580,567. 
 
At number eight is Bogota with a population of 8,493,675. Lima, Peru is at the number nine slot. It has a population of 8,482,612. Dallas/Fort Worth is at number ten. The population is 6,447,615.
