Nesting Box Sizes

Nesting boxes help boost egg production in chicken coops. Whether you decide to buy or build one, the nesting box sizes have to be considered seriously.

Why are the Nesting Box Dimensions so Important?

The dimensions of the box can influence the hen’s behavior. A cramped box for example, will stress the hens and affect their production. However, you cannot make the boxes too big either. Research has shown that a small (not cramped) nesting box is the key to good egg production.

The Ideal Nesting Box Measurements

A good nesting box width is 12 inches. The ideal depth is also 12 inches, while the height should be 9 inches. Studies have shown that these dimensions keep the hens from scratching the box or fouling them.

The entryway should be six inches high and nine inches wide. An entrance this size will reduce the amount of light inside the box. This is essential for continued egg production.

Moreover, the compact entrance keeps the straw in place. This also ascertains the eggs will not turn and roll. This also keeps the eggs from getting cracked or pecked.

Other Information

Make sure that the nesting box is set 3 to 4 feet above the round. This will keep the insects and other small creatures from getting to the eggs. Make sure that you replace the straws monthly. This will prevent the chickens from becoming sick. This has to be done regardless of the nesting box sizes.

Notes on Building Nesting Boxes

Get a straw hammer, nails, saw and a crate. Use the hammer to take off the crate’s front. Cut the front of the crate and get a 3 inch strip. Nail the strip to the crate’s opening at the bottom. Repeat these steps for the rear of the crate. Place the straws in the box, and you are done.

Tips

If you don’t want to make a nesting box, just buy one. These are available in many designs and styles. The cost will vary depending on how many pieces you buy and how big it is.

Just make sure to look at different stores so you can find the most affordable one. If you are going to buy a lot, try looking online as they are quite inexpensive.

The importance of nesting box sizes cannot be overstated. If you want to try and build one, make sure you know what you are doing. Do not hesitate to consult an expert if you are unsure of the construction process.
