When buying your hose, you have to consider two important factors, which will figure how efficient it will be able to carry water to the plants.
The first consideration is the size or the diameter of the tube itself. Naturally, the bigger opening your hose has, the more gallons of water it will deliver per minute. On the average, a hose with ½ inch diameter would deliver 9 gallons per minute; a hose with 5/8 diameter would deliver 17 gallons per minute; a hose with 3/4” diameter would deliver 23 gallons per minute.
Another significant factor is the length. How long is a garden hose would determine how efficient it would be able to carry water. The longer your hose will be, the fewer gallons it will be able to deliver per minute. The standard length that household owners usually look for is about 50 inches. Some buy a shorter or longer one, depending on their requirements and preference.
Some Garden Hose Tips
Here are some tips that would ensure a long, efficient lifespan of your garden hose:
* Choose a garden hose with the biggest diameter if you are buying an extra long one.
* It is also advisable to buy the one with the widest opening if water pressure in your place is 40 psi and lower. If the opening is larger, there would be very little pressure lost along the way.
* Do not bend your hose when you use it or store it. If it is kinked, the risk for premature cracking is higher.
* Do not hang your coiled hose on a sharp object such as nail or hook when storing it. You must keep it on a hose hanger or reel, coiled in a wide bracket.
* When preparing to store your hose for the winter, make sure that you drain all the water inside.
* Work out a kink carefully by hand to prevent leak points from sprouting.
