Area Rug Sizes

Choosing area rug sizes can be difficult because there are so many available. However, there are standard dimensions used.

Standard Area Rug Dimensions

The most popular are 2 x 3 feet to 2.6 x 4 feet, 3 x 5 feet, 4 x 6 feet, 6 x 9 feet, 8 x 10 feet and 9 x 12 feet. It doesn’t matter whether the rugs are made in the US or elsewhere. They will almost certainly be in inches and feet. Of course there are bigger ones available for larger rooms. Rectangles are the most common size, but circles, ovals and runners are also available. Different patterns and styles are made.

How to Pick Area Rug Sizes

You can choose any size provided it fits into the floor space. Most designers suggest there be a clear floor border of 18 to 24 inches on both sides. This makes the rug and the whole area more interesting. Small rugs like 3 x 3 and 2 x 3 can be used as bedroom accents. At the same time they accentuate throw pillow and curtain colors. Runners are technically not rugs, although they are sometimes classified as such. They are best used in hallways.

The most widely used sizes are 6 x 8 and 4 x 6 feet. These dimensions can be used as furniture covering. You can also use 6 x 9 rugs to give accent to a table. These sizes can also be used to group several pieces of furniture.

Design Suggestions

Large rugs can be used to separate areas in your home. For instance, you can put a 4 x 6 rug below a dining table to unite living and dining rooms. 6 x 8, 8 x 10 and larger rugs are better off used for lofts or large living rooms.

Notes on Cut Sizes

Cut and standard sizes are not the same. The difference in fact can be by as much as half a foot. The six inch difference is most apparent in rugs that are handwoven. Often, standard sizes are bigger than a cut size. This means that a 9 x 12 ft rug might really be 8’ 6” x 11’ 6”. Cut sizes are cheaper though. If you are not sure, take a close look at its features and specs.

Area rug sizes like those given here are only suggestions. There are many more to choose from. You can also use them any way you like.
