The square miles of Australia total 2,941,299 sq mi or 7,617,930 km2. Its population has been estimated at 22,561,163 in 2010. The 2006 census showed a population of 19,855,288. The density is 2.833/km2 / 7.3/sq mi. 

 

 

Sydney is the most populated area with 4,504,469 inhabitants. Melbourne is the second most populated with 3,995,537 residents. The rest of the top ten are comprised of Brisbane 2,004,262, Perth 1,658,992, Adelaide (1,187,466), Gold Coast-Tweed (577,977) and Newcastle (540,796). At number eight is Canberra-Queanbeyan 403,118 and nine is Wollongong 288,984. At number ten is Sunshine Coast with 245,309.

 

 

The annual population growth is 1.2%. The population distribution is uneven. Studios show over 80% of the people live in less than 2% of the continent. Majority of the people live in the cities by the coast. Studies show that majority of the population are getting older and the young population declining. 

 

 

The square miles of Australia make it 32 times bigger than the United Kingdom. Cape Byron New South Wales is the most easterly point in the country. South East Cape in Tasmania is the most southerly area. 

 

Australia is such a large country that its weather varies. The air temperature is about 28 C in western Australia. In the alpine regions of south eastern Australia it is 4 C.

 

It is coldest in July and the hottest months are January and February in the south. In the north the hottest month is in December. 

 

In the northwest November is the warmest month. The rainfall in north-west New South Wales is 200 mm or less. The highest rainfall is at Cardwell and Cairns. Australia has depressions and low plains and few mountain ranges. 

 

 

There is no official state religion in the country. Based on a 2006 census, 64% of Australians describe themselves as belonging to a Christian denomination. 19% are Anglican and 26% Roman Catholic. 20% of the population surveyed says they have no religion. In this case, no religion includes rationalism, agnosticism, atheism and humanism.

 

 Non-Christian groups include Judaism (0.5%), Hinduism (0.8%) and Islam (1.7%). A 2001 survey showed that church attendance was 1.5 million, less than 7.7% of the population. Surveys however, indicate that religion is not crucial in the lives of many Australians.
