The corridor is another term for the hallway. While it can have many connotations, the term nowadays refers to a passageway that will lead to a room, stairs or area. 

Size of a Corridor

The dimensions of corridors and hallways are usually measured by width. The average is 36 inches. But this is for the small or average sized home. Even then, 36 inches may be a bit too narrow. 

For many people, the minimum has to be at least 40 inches. 48 inches is even better. As a rule, small corridors are those that are less than four feet wide. 3 to 3’ 8” feet will be sufficient for smaller homes.

Wide and Large Corridors 

The size of the home should be proportional to these corridors. A 2,000 square foot house will look fine with a 4 ft wide hallway. The size of a corridor is particularly important for houses over 3,000 square feet. In this case the corridor has to be wide to match the setting. A long corridor will have to be wide too. 

The wide corridors will come in handy if you are going to move a lot large furniture. A narrow hallway won’t do; you’ll just end up scratching the furniture. 

Space Requirements for Wheelchairs 

The minimum width needed by a wheelchair is 32 inches. For a wheelchair to turn 90 degrees to the doorway, a minimum space of inches is required. 

For a 180 degree turn it is 60 inches. But if you are thinking of the size of a corridor, you’re better off making it wider than this. 48 inches should be just right. 

Way to Decorate Corridors

If the corridor is narrow, you can make it look wider by painting a deeper hue on the narrow ends. If there is room, add a dresser or bookcase to the corridor. This will make the corridor look more attractive. Just make sure that it doesn’t cause traffic. 

Another way to make the corridor more interesting is to add some paintings on the walls. This is a good option particularly if the corridor is long. Alternatively you can add photographs instead. You can also add picture ledges 4 feet from the floor. By switching the pictures, you’ll be able to sustain interest in the hallway. 

Colors and Lighting

Use light colors for the doors and moldings. As a rule, light hues will make the corridor look more spacious. If the wall has a dark color, use light colored paintings so it doesn’t look too dreary. If there is light emanating from the corridor, minimal or no window treatment is necessary. 

Use a skylight or other lighting to lighten up the area. A dark corridor can evoke claustrophobic feelings. 

The place will also seem too tight. A carpet can be used as long as there’s no danger of anyone slipping over it. 

No matter what the size of a corridor is, you can make it more functional by adding a place to put coats or hats. This will be appreciated by your guests.
