Size of Home Gyms

If you want to set up a gym at home, space will be a major issue. The following are some of the things you have to consider when it comes to home gym sizes.

How Much Space is Needed?

This will depend on how many pieces of equipment you are going to use. If you are only going to require a barbell, a few dumbbells and a bench, only a section of a room will be necessary. For a whole fitness system, you’ll need an entire room.

It will also help if you determine the space required by each piece. On the average, treadmills require 30 sq ft. The elliptical bikes need about 10 feet. The stair climbers require 10 to 20 square feet. Free weights need about 20 to 50 feet.

Rowing machines require 20 sq ft. Your home gym size will need 35 square feet for single station. If you want a multi-station gym, it necessitates 50 to 200 square feet.

Other Space Considerations

The space mentioned above is only for the equipment. You must also have room to move around. The equipment must also be spaced properly to avoid accidents. There is also the question of aesthetics.

How to Deal with Space Limitations

If space is limited, get workout equipment that is foldable. Many of the fitness products are designed to save space. However, this is not a complete solution. The equipment may save space when collapsed. But what if they are all opened up? If that is the problem, you have a few options.

The first is to buy compact equipment. Thigh masters and exercise bikes can save a lot of room. You can find several of these on the Net and in various stores.

The second option is to buy only the necessary equipment. It is easy to get caught up and buy all sorts of fitness gear. If the room is small, it’s best to stick with portable gear like dumbbells, sit up mats and push bars.

Clearance and Entryway

Before you buy, check the ceiling clearance. Make sure the fitness gear isn’t too tall. You also have to assess the entryway. Is that treadmill or exercise bike going to fit in the doorway?

If you can afford an expansive home gym size, you can place as many equipment as possible. In this case, divide the room in sections. Place the treadmill in a corner, the punching bag at another corner and so on.
