Largest Ski Resort

The world’s largest ski resort is Powder Mountain, situated to the east of Eden, Utah. The resort has skiable area of 5,500 acres (22.26 km2). 2,800 acres (11.33 km2) are lift served.

Facts and Figures

The resort stretches between the counties of Cache and Weber. The closest city is Utah 7 miles (11 km) to the south. Salt Lake is 55 miles (89 km) to the south and Ogden 19 miles (31 km) southwest.

The vertical is 2522 ft/769 m (via snowcat) and 2000 ft (610 m, lift served). The top elevation is 9422 ft / 2872 m via snowcat and 8900 ft (2713 m) lift-served. The base elevation is 6900 ft (2103 m).

Runs and the Lift System

The world’s largest ski resort has 113 runs. The longest run is 3 mi (4.8 km). The lift capacity is 6350 skiers per hour. The lift system consists of 4 chairs and 3 surface lifts. There are two terrain parks. The annual snowfall is 414 inches.

Timeline

In 1971, the Sundown Lift was opened and its school was opened. In 1972-73, the Main Lodge, Sundown Lodge and Timberline Lift were opened. In 1975, the Hidden Lake Lift was installed. 1981 saw the introduction of shuttle service for its employees.

In 1985, snowboarding was introduced at the resort. The Hidden Lake Day Lodge was added in 1987. In 1995, the Sunrise Lift was inaugurated. The year 2000 saw the opening of Paradise Lift. Cat skiing was relocated to Lightning Ridge.

Powder Mountain Today

There are now four chair lifts in the resort. They consist of a detachable quad, a fixed quad and double. A quad is set to replace the triple. There are also three surface tows. One of Powder’s biggest attractions is the area not covered by the chairlifts.

The resort also offers helicopter service at the parking lot. There are several green and blue runs at the resort. There are also a few blacks. More black runs are under the Paradise Lift. The Lightning Ridge also has some black runs.

Other Information

Powder Mountain is being marketed as a ski resort. For this reason, there is not a lot of dining or after hour entertainment. 2,500 in bounds vertical feet make it the ideal place to head to following some good snow.

The world’s largest ski resort is mostly visited by local residents. Its position makes it a bit difficult to access.
