How to Make a Jack o Lantern Pumpkin

Required Tools and Materials

Paring knife
Large pumpkin
Black permanent marker
Butcher knife
Thrash bag
Spoon
1 candle

Step 1

Make a circle or hexagon above pumpkin.

Step 2

Thrust the butcher knife in the pumpkin. Cut the pumpkin along the circle / hexagon. Depending on the Jack o Lantern size, this process may be swift or take awhile. Take off the top.

Step 3

Get rid of the rind using the butcher knife. Make a notch at the top so hot air can get out. This is necessary so the pumpkin doesn’t get damaged by the heat.

Step 4

Get the spoon and take away the filaments and seeds. Throw them in the trash bag. Also remove some of the rind in the pumpkin.

Step 5

Draw the eyes, nose and mouth on the pumpkin. Let the marker dry for a couple of minutes. Note: a large Jack o Lantern size pumpkin is recommended for first timers; they’ll be easier to draw on.

Step 6

Cut the eyes, nose and mouth with the paring knife. Throw away the pieces.

Step 7

Put the candle inside the pumpkin.

Tips

After cutting out the pattern, make angled cuts with a knife. This helps in bringing out the light from within the pumpkin. If you want more intricate cuts on the pumpkin, use a rotary tool. You’ll need a sizeable pumpkin though; fancy designs can be hard to do on small ones.
