How Large is a Piano

The piano dimensions will be easier to understand if you are aware of the types. They are divided between the horizontal and vertical types.

The Horizontal Pianos

Also known as the grand pianos, there are six types: the Petite Grand, Baby Grand, Medium Grand, Parlor Grand, Semiconcert Pianos and Concert Grand.

The Petite Grand typically measure 4 ft 5 in to 4 ft 10 in. These are the smallest horizontal types currently available. The Baby Grand measure 4 ft 11 inches up to 5 ft 6 inches. These are among the most popular models sold today.

The Medium Grand are bigger than the Baby Grand. Its measurements are 5 ft 7 in. The Parlor Grand piano dimensions measure 5 ft 9 in up to 6 ft 1 in. This is also known as the living room grand piano.

The Semiconcert or Ballroom pianos are 7 ft long, while the Concert Grand is the largest type. They are often 9 ft long. Some are even larger.

Vertical Pianos

There are four variants here; upright, studio, console and spinet. Each type comes in different sizes. But on the average, they are 36 to 60 inches tall.

The Spinet is 36 to 38 inches tall and 58 inches wide. It is the smallest piano you may buy. This is ideal for homes with restricted space. The Console is 58 inches wide and 43 inches high. The studio is 58 inches wide and 48 inches tall. The Upright is the biggest of the vertical types. Its height is around 50 to 60 inches. These are also about 50 inches wide.

Differences between Pianos and Organs

Apart from the form, their keyboard setups differ. The piano is part of the percussion musical instruments. The organ is classified with brass and woodwinds. The piano’s sound is produced when the key is struck. The key is connected to a hammer and when hit, this hits a string.

The keyboard of an organ does not hit anything. What happens is that a circuit is completed when the key is struck. The keys are also locked into precise frequencies. The notes can be pressed indefinitely without needing to hit them again and again.

The many different piano dimensions and types is great news for the consumer. If you are a casual player or just need one at home, the smaller versions will be sufficient. But if you play music professionally (or intend to), the concert sized types will be required.
