File Cabinet Dimensions

The file cabinet dimensions determine how many documents and files you can put in there. It has proven to be so useful that they have become mainstays in the workplace and home.

Purpose

While they are available in several sizes, the objective is the same. It is used as an organizer. File folders and documents are stored in it.

Vertical File Cabinets

This is the most widely used design today. The ones used in the office and home are either the three or four drawer type. They are sold in the legal paper or letter size.

The terms legal and letter paper size refer to the width, not the whole file cabinet dimensions. The depths can vary. Many are 25 inches deep, but others have a depth of 28 inches.

Shelf File

These have only shelves, no drawers. The average depth is 12 to 18 inches. They are usually 30 to 42 inches wide and 6 inches tall.

Lateral File Types

Their widths range from 30, 36 to 42 inches. The average depth is 20 inches. In the UK, these are called the side filer. Besides the different widths, they also have different number of drawers installed. Some have two, but others five.

Horizontal File

The horizontal design is one of the oldest used. Studies indicate they have been in use since the 1880s. Many of these have a safe and a lock. Many of them are also fitted with a lock. These are available in a variety of sizes.

Other Designs

These cabinets can be lateral, vertical, horizontal or shelf. Many cabinets are still made from wood. Modern units however, are usually constructed from metal. Wood is preferred by those who favor the classical style. However, metal cabinets are fire resistant.

How to Choose

Determine how much space you will need. A mistake that some people make is to just account for their present needs. Always consider how many documents and folders you are going to put there. Do not forget to assess the space around the room.

It should be large enough to fit your needs. But at the same time, there should be space for you to move around. Of course, the unit must fit in the opening where you intend to put it.

Always keep an eye on upcoming products. While the file cabinet dimensions described above are commonplace, there are many other variants coming up.
