Bed Sizes and Names

There are different bed sizes and names around the world. Some countries even have their own standards. We will give you bed names and sizes to help you decide, at your better judgment, the right kind for your bedroom.

US Standard

The US standard bed sizes are considered the market standards. They are the most commonly available in many different home stores all over the world. They are also considered the Canadian standard.

Single – 39” x 75”
Double/Full – 54” x 75”
Twin Extra Long – 39” x 80”
Three Quarter – 48” x 75”
Super Single – 48” x 84”
Full Extra Long – 53” x 80”
Queen – 60” x 80”
California Queen – 60” x 84”
Olympic Queen – 66” x 80”
King – 76” x 80”
California King – 72” x 84”

UK Standard

Among the most common bed standard sizes, the UK standard is next to the US standard. They only have differences of a couple of inches, and some difference in the terms used. This is the same standard used in Ireland.

Toddler Bed – 27” x 55”
Small Single – 30” x 72”
Standard Single – 36” x 75”
Prince or Small Double or Three Quarter – 48” x 75”
Standard Double – 54” x 75”
King – 60” x 75”
Super King, also regarded as the “Queen” – 72” x 75”

It is also interesting to note that some UK bed sizes can be availed of by special order. They include the larger bed sizes including the Eastern King, which is 78 inches wide; the Emperor, which is 84 inches wide; the Large Emperor, which is almost 85 inches wide; and Ceasar, which is 96 inches wide.

Italy Standard

In Italy, the bed sizes are classified according to width only. They are also called different Italian terms.

Una piazza or Singolo – 31 to 35 inches
Una piazza e mezza — 47 inches
Piazza francese — 55 inches
Due piazze or Matrimoniale – 63 to 71 inches
Tre piazze or Osimano – 79 to 157 inches

Australia Standard

Australia also has its own standard list of bed names and sizes. They include:

Single – 36” × 74”
Single Extra Long – 36” × 80”
King Single – 42” × 80”
Double – 54” × 74”
Queen – 60” × 80”
King – 72” × 80”

As you can see, there are different terminologies used on beds manufactured in different countries. They also come in different dimensions. When shopping for a bed, it is important that you take note of this. This list shall guide you in choosing the perfect size of bed that will fit your needs.
