Anti Sway Bars Sizes

Anti sway bars sizes and specs differ with some 24 mm and others 15 mm, 27 mm or 20 mm long. But the steps needed to replace them are relatively straightforward and similar.

How to Install Anti Sway Bars

Required Tools

  • Set of wrenches
  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • 3/8 inch drive ratchet
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack

Step 1

Raise the vehicle using the jacks. Position the jack stands below the frame. Take off the sway bar links by grabbing the bolt’s top with a 13 mm wrench. Remove the nut below the lower control arm with the socket. It is vital that you pay attention to the bushings arrangement.

Step 2

Put the floor jack below the front center of the sway. Raise the jack so the sway bar is supported. Remove the two bolts in the mounting brackets of the sway bars. Lower the jack and take off the sway.

Step 3

Place the new sway in front of the old sway. Take the rubber bushings off the old bar and set them on the new one. Look for the flat spot at the bushing’s side. This will face up to the frame. There is also a slit in every bushing. This is necessary so they can be spread for the bar.

Step 4

Put the middle of the bar on the floor jack. Raise the bar to about three inches at the frame (this should be done regardless of the anti sway bars size). When you install the sway bar links, do it in the reverse order they were taken out. Secure the nuts.

Step 5

Hold the clamps onto the frame mounting holes. Keep moving the rubber bushing until they are below the clamps. Raise the jack so it becomes possible to pinch the sway bar onto the frame. Mount the bolts in the sway bar clamps. Make sure they are tight. You can now lower the jack.

Tips and Warnings

Make sure the jacks are properly positioned before you start. It is also a good idea to work in an area with plenty of clear space. This will ensure you don’t lose any of the bolts. You must also be certain the sockets and ratchets size mentioned here are the ones used.

While the anti sway bars sizes are important, so is the quality. You should only purchase from quality auto parts shops. Should the component have any additional instructions, make sure you do it as indicated.
