The piston rod is the device connected to the piston. However, automobiles today do not actually have a real piston but rather a connecting rod. The piston rod and connecting rod are now used interchangeably.

While the piston rod dimensions specified in most products refer to connecting rods, this isn’t true with steam locomotives which actually have piston rods installed.
