What is the Size of a Razor Blade?

Different razor blade sizes are used for shaving, cutting and other applications. Some blades measure 2-1/4″x 1/2″ and 1-1/2″ x 3/4″. The thickness also varies.

Overview

This blade is designed primarily to remove hair on the body. This is done by shaving. There are several types including electric, disposable and straight razors. These have been around since the Bronze Age.

But the modern versions appeared during the 18th century. It was during the 1930s when the electric razors first appeared. The safety razor is the most widely used in the 21st century.

Safety Razors

This was invented by Jean-Jacques Perret in the 19th century. Various razor blade sizes would eventually appear. The earliest models kept the skin safe except for the blade’s edge.

In 1901, King Camp Gillette and William Nickerson developed safety razors with disposable blades. It proved to be a success and other companies would imitate it. Different kinds of materials are used to make these.

Straight Razors

These have open steel blades and were widely used prior to the 20th century. They became less popular as the safety blades emerged. But they are still widely used by barbers. These devices are comprised of one blade. One side is sharpened. Some are made of stainless steel while others are made of carbon steel.

Both types are still available. The blade spins on a pin between scales. The scales shield the blade when it is folded. This also protects people from possible cuts. Different materials are used for the scales. Some of them are wood, plastic, bone, celluloid and mother-of-pearl.

Electric Razors

These devices have an oscillating blade inside. Unlike other types, you do not need to use water, soap or shaving cream. A DC motor runs the device. Some utilize rechargeable batteries.

There are some models that use the electro-mechanical oscillator. The older versions do not have a motor; they were hand-powered. The early electric razors could be used on dry skin only.

However, the newer models can be used on wet skin too. This allows you to clean the blade as you use it. These devices cut and lift hairs differently. That is why some people take a while getting used to it. There are also many variants and styles to choose from.

While the razor blade sizes matter a lot, their sharpness and durability are more important. These blades are not equally made so you need to check each one.
