Spoons are one of the everyday cooking utensils that we Spoonfind in our homes. It consists of a handle with either an oval or round bowl. In the United States, spoons are made part of every day cutlery and are classified as flatware. Spoons can be used to prepare and serve food. It is also used to measure ingredients when food is being prepared. Spoons can be made of metal, plastic, or wood. Here are some interesting facts about spoons and spoon sizes.

Spoon Sizes

Official spoon sizes are different from one country to the other. However, do take note that the sizes do differ only by a slight fraction. For example, though there is a standard SI for measuring spoons and tablespoons in Europe, the difference in spoon size with their counterparts in the US doesn’t make that much of a difference.

If we were to arrange spoons according to average spoon sizes from smallest to largest then we begin with teaspoons, then dessert and soup spoons, and finally a tablespoon. A teaspoon can hold about 5ml while an average dessert or soup spoon can hold 10ml. A tablespoon can hold up to three full teaspoons or 15ml.

Though soup spoons and dessert spoons have the same capacities they are for the most part quite different. However, it is interesting that people often use them interchangeably. A soup spoon’s shape is round having a concave bowl. A dessert spoon on the other hand will be egg-like in shape. So, in terms of capacity a tablespoon is the equivalent of three teaspoons while two soup or dessert spoons are equivalent to one tablespoon.

Measuring Spoons

Measuring spoons on the other hand are kitchen utensils that are specifically used to measure ingredients. They can be used to measure both dry and liquid ingredients when preparing your food. They can be made of other materials besides metal or plastic.

Measuring spoons are usually sold in a set in various spoon sizes. You can find four- and six-set measuring spoons. You can even find sets that have more than ten spoons. These sets will include various spoons of different sizes. The common sizes you will usually find are one tablespoon, one teaspoon, half a tablespoon, half a teaspoon, and a fourth of a teaspoon sizes.

Eating/Cooking/Serving

Not all spoons are the same. Some spoons are used for eating, some for cooking, while others are used for serving food. At times various spoons are named after a food or drink they are usually used for. Sometimes spoons are used named after the material they’re made of or their appearance.
