List of Worlds Largest Animals

The following is a list of the world’s largest animals. The figures given below are their average sizes. Some specimens may be slightly bigger or smaller than the numbers cited.

Largest Animal Ever

The blue whale is the largest animal to have ever lived. They can reach lengths of 33.3 m (109 ft) and weigh over 190 metric tons (210 short tons).

Largest Living Land Animal

The African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta Africana is the biggest. The average weight is 18,500 lbs and the maximum mass is 27,000 lb. On the average it is 6.56 (21.85 ft) long. The biggest on record weighed 24,000 lb (11,000 kg), and stood 3.96 m (13.0 ft) tall.

Largest Reptile

It is the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). An adult male can reach a length of 4.5 to 5 m (15 to 17 ft). The biggest saltwater crocodile ever recorded weighed over 3,000 lb (1,360 kg) and 20 ft 8 in (6.30 m) long.

Largest Birds

The ostrich (Struthio camelus) is the largest bird living today. It can weigh 156 kg (345 lb) and be taller than 2.7 m (9 ft). The biggest bird on the fossil record is the extinct elephant birds of Madagascar. The elephant bird weighed 500 kg (1,120 lb) and stood over 3 m (10 ft) tall.

Biggest Amphibian

In this list of the world’s largest animals, the Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias davidianus) ranks as the biggest amphibian. It can reach a maximum length of 64 kg (140 lb) and 1.83 m (6 ft). The largest amphibian-like creature to have ever lived is the Prionosuchus. It reached lengths of 9 m (30 ft).

Largest Carnivores

The biggest living carnivore is the Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina). The biggest on record is 6.9 m (22.5 ft) long and weighs 5,000 kg (11,000 lb). The biggest land carnivores are the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) and the Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus). Both are 1.5 m (5 ft) tall and weigh over 1 ton (2,200 lb).

Largest Dinosaur

The biggest dinosaurs were the Sauropoda. It is difficult to determine their size because of incomplete remains. Current estimates put the Amphicoelias at 122.4 tons. It is also the longest at 40–60 m (131–198 ft+.

This list of the world’s largest animals does not include organisms from the plant kingdom and so-called superorganisms. If superorganisms are included in the list, the largest would be the Great Barrier Reef at over 2,000 km.
