Function

However it can be held back up to 800 ml. The size of the bladder depends on the amount of urine that’s being kept. But the time will come when the sphincters will be forced to open. The urethra will open and the urine will come out.

The ability to hold back urine varies per individual. Children have less control over their bladders. Emotional and stressful situations may also cause the bladder to release small amounts of urine. This is by no means indicative of any severe abnormal conditions.

Bladder Disorders

The most conspicuous symptoms will be problems urinating. Bladder disorders lead to painful and increased urination. The urine may also appear cloudy and reddish. The urine may also be mixed with blood. In these cases, the size of the bladder is less indicative of the source of the pain than when it occurs.

If the pain commences at the beginning of urination, the problem is related to the bladder. If the pain appears later, it’s more likely due to kidney ailments.

Prevention

If you suspect the pain to be related to the kidneys, see your doctor immediately. The problems with the bladder can be indicative of other health problems too. Food doesn’t actually cause these problems. However, certain foods and drinks can make a bladder problem much worse.

Besides having the size of the bladder checked by your doctor, there are preventive measures you can take. Reduce or totally eliminate caffeinated drinks from your diet. Coffee and soft drinks include methylxanthines and other sweeteners.

These fill up the bladder quickly and lead to frequent urination. Their high sugar content can also lead to diabetes and other health problems.

Other Information

Bladder problems also emanate from excessive intake of spicy foods and seasonings. Citrus juices, chocolates and candies might contribute to problems too. If you urinate too much, reduce the amount of liquids you drink. However do not decrease it too much. Your body needs plenty of fluids to function.

If you drastically reduce the liquid you drink, the urine will turn yellowish and generate a smell. This can lead to health problems too. It’s also better to spread your liquid intake throughout the day. Don’t drink a lot in the mornings and go dry the rest of the day. This will only cause you to urinate frequently in the mornings.

In the end, it’s not the size of the bladder that matters as the stuff you eat. With a proper and balanced diet, your bladder will function normally.
