Bike Dimensions Guide

A bike dimensions guide usually consists of the frame size, the matching height and inside leg. Measurements may be in inches or centimeters. The following are some of the figures you will see in bike charts.

Tire Bike Sizes

One of the main points of comparison is the tires. Bikes are often labeled 26”, 28” or 29”. This refers to the tire diameter. Traditional mountain bikes use 26 inch tires. But a growing number now use 29 inch tires. Although heavier, they make it easier to overcome obstacles and improve traction. Another difference is in the width. Narrow tires are more suited for smooth surfaces. The range is from 1.8 to 3 inches.

MTB – Off Road (Hardtail) Guide

If your height is 4’10” – 5’0″ with an inside leg of 26″ – 28″, the suggested frame is 13″. For 5’0″ – 5’3″ heights and 27″ – 29″ inside leg, the 14″, 15” frames are ideal. 16″ or 17″ frames are better off for those who are 5’4″ – 5’7″ with inside leg between 28″ – 30″. A typical bike dimensions guide will show that 5’8″ – 5’9″ riders are compatible with 18″ or 19″ frames.

Heights of 5’10” – 5’11” with 30″ – 32″ inside leg is more suited for 20″ frames. If you are 6’0″ – 6’2″, the suggested frame is 21″. 22” frames are for 6’2″ – 6’4″ people with 33″ – 35” inside leg measurements.

Measurements for off road (full suspension) mountain bikes are different. 5’4″ – 5’7″ riders will be more comfortable with 14″ or 15″ frames. Those 5’8″ – 5’9″ are better off with 16″, 17″ or 18″ frames. 5’10” and above can use 19″, 20″ or 21″ frames.

Comparing Hybrid / Comfort Bikes

These bikes are often measured by the tire and frame. Most of them use the standard 26” tire. But there are different frames to choose from. 13″ and 14″ frames are recommended for 4’10” +, while 5’0″ + may be more at ease with 15″. The 16″ frames are for 5’2″ riders. If you stand around 5’4″, 17″ frames are often the best. For people 5’6″, 18″ frames are ideal. The 19” frames are for 5’8″ people.

When using bike dimensions guide or chart, always remember that the figures they provide are for information purposes. It is still best to check the bike in person and try it out. Aside from the size, you also have to consider your own personal preferences.
