Overview

LCD (liquid crystal display) is a type of digital TV. These TVs have flat panels. LCD technology was built to replace cathode ray tube (CRT). Its main rival is plasma. LCD is widely used for television, but it is also used on other electronic gadgets like cell phones and laptops. If you look at it, a computer monitor is just like a TV. The only difference is that it is built to work with computers and can be hooked up with other peripherals.

Today, LCDs and plasma are used on HD TVs. Unlike CRTs, LCDs do not take up a lot of space. The reason why CRTs are so big is due to the vacuum tube device inside it. Even when compared with the biggest LCD TV sizes, they are lighter than the typical CRT. LCDs are not just light; they are also space savers. Some of them can be hung on walls.

The LCD Technology

These TVs work by using numerous layers contained in the panel. They are responsible for producing the images you see on the screen. The main parts are a liquid crystal solution, a colored pixel mask, polarized glass, backlight and a sheet of polarized glass.

More about LCD Dimensions

These TVs have so many features that finding the right one can be a challenge. Of course size is going to be crucial. The biggest is not always the best. It all depends on your room requirements. It also hinges on your viewing distance. On the high end are those that measure 50 inches and higher. Smaller TV sets are available too, many in the 20 to 30 inch range.

Small ones are ideal for bedrooms or the kitchen. Larger sets are for living rooms / home theater. However, it all depends on what you are comfortable with. But the basic rule of thumb is that the farther you are, the bigger the screen has to be.
