20ft Container Dimensions

The 20 ft container dimensions are not the largest ones available, but it is regarded as something of a standard. The proceeding information illustrates the different types of 20 ft containers being used today.

20 Ft Open Tops

The 20 ft open top has doors measuring 17’9 9/16" x 7’3 1/2" (5.425 m x 2.223 m; L x W). The interior dimensions are 19’5" x 7’8 1/16" x 7’6" (5.919 m x 2.340 m x 2.286 m; L x W x H). The open top tare weight is 4,799 lbs (equal to 2,177 kg). The capacity is 1,143 cu. ft or 32.0 cbm. The payload is 48,110 lbs / 21,823 kg.

20 ft Flat Rack

The 20 ft container dimensions are a bit different for the 20 ft flat rack. It is 7’7 9/16" high, 7’10 3/8" wide and 19’5 5/8" long.

20 ft Standard Dry

The 20 ft standard dry container comes with a door measuring 7’4 1/16" / 2.238 m high and 7’6" / 2.286 m wide. The inner dimensions measure 5.440 m x 2.294 m x 2.237 m (17’10 3/16" x 7’6 1/4" x 7’4 1/16"; L x W x H). With these figures, the payload capacity is 53,460 lbs (equivalent to 24,250 kg). The tare weight is 2,750 kg or 6,062 lbs.

20 Ft High Cube Containers

The 20 ft high cube measures 19’5" x 7’8 1/16" x 7’6" (L x W x H). This is equal to 5.919 m x 2.340 m x 2.286 m. The door is 7’4 9/16" (2.251 m) high and 7’6" (2.286 m) wide. The payload of a 20 ft high cube is 24,800 kg or 54,673 lbs. The tare weight is 1,900 kg or 4,189 lbs. The cubic capacity is 1,179 cu.ft or 33.0 cbm.

TEU

20 ft containers are also the basis for the TEU, used for estimating shipping capacities. A single TEU is equivalent to a single 20 ft container with dimensions of 8.5 ft (2.6 m) x 8 ft (2.4 m (H x W).

The volume used for TEU comparison is 1,360 cu ft. Using these figures, 2 TEUs is equivalent to a couple of 20 ft containers with the dimensions given earlier.

Even though the 20 ft container dimensions are small compared to the 30 ft or 40 ft units, it is still widely used. Even with the advent of other sizes, it seems likely that the container will still be used for years to come.
