More Facts about Kegs

The traditional wood keg is constructed by a cooper utilized for transporting gunpowder, nails and different types of liquids. Modern kegs are made of steel or aluminum. Its main function is to serve beer, transport and store beer. However, kegs can also be used to store other drinks (alcoholic, non-alcoholic, non-carbonated, carbonated).

16 gallon keg dimensions or not, kegs are almost always built of stainless steel. On rare cases you will find some made from aluminum. Kegs have one opening at the end. A spear / tube goes up off the opening onto the other end.

A coupling fitting is used to open the valve. The top of the spear has an opening so gas can come out. Beer and gas flow is controlled by one or two valves. To dispense the beer, the keg has to be upright so beer can be dispensed.
