Sizes of Oil Filters

There are several oil filter sizes and types to fit different needs. The K&N HP-1010 measures 3.2 x 3.2 x 3.8 inches. The other units you will see on the Net measure 4 x 4 x 4, 4 x 3.2 x 2.8 inches and 6 x 4.4 x 4.6 inches.

Overview

The filter is situated on the engine block’s side. This is the lower, bigger portion of the engine. When an oil pump moves the oil in the engine, it will go through the filter.

The filter helps protect the system by intercepting particles present in the oil. If this is not done, the engine may get damaged. This will occur if the particles circulate without interruption.

Purpose

The different oil filter sizes also shields the engine by keeping some of the oil when the vehicle is not running. The portion of the filter that enables retention is known as the anti-drainback valve.

When the engine is not running, the oil is drained into the bottom. This means the moving components at the engine’s top do not have the required lubrication to operate.

But the oil kept in the filter rapidly circulates on the engine’s top. This takes place a few seconds after the vehicle starts. This lubrication makes it possible for the vehicle to start.

Oil Filter Types

Various filters are sold today. Standard types are suitable for most cars. However, it needs to be replaced before 4,828 km (3,000 miles). There are many features, but the anti-drainback valve is a must.

Without it, the engine will not have the lubrication required to start it up. If this is not included, an alternative must be in place. Some filters have Teflon. This helps in the circulation of oil in the engine. In some filters, the Teflon is set in the gasket.

Reminders

For the best results, the filter should be replaced every three months or every 3,000 miles. Do not let it exceed 3,000 miles because it will already be filled with a lot of dirt.

If the filter is clogged, engine flow resistance will increase. This will prevent lubrication from getting into the various engine components. This will cause major damage.

Besides the oil filter sizes, you must also check how easy they can be wrenched off. Some use resin impregnated cellulose filter media. This allows for superior flow rates while allowing for filtration. The high filter flow rate is necessary for racing vehicles.
