Pallet Dimensions

There is no universally accepted standard size for pallets. The following are the frequently used today.

Pallet Dimensions: the ISO Standards

The 1219 × 1016 mm / 48.00 × 40.00 in (W x L) is used in North America. The 1000 × 1200 mm (39.37 × 47.24 in) pallets are used in many parts of Asia and Europe. This is quite similar to the 48 x 40”. In Australia, the common size used is the 1165 × 1165 mm (44.88 × 44.88 in).

The 1067 × 1067 mm (42.00 × 42.00 in) size is also used in North America and some countries in Asia and Europe. Asian countries also use the 1100 × 1100 mm (43.30 × 43.30 in) size. Most doorways in Europe use the 800 × 1200 mm (31.50 × 47.24 in) size.

The wasted floor (ISO container) specs are as follows: 1219 × 1016 (3.7%); 1000 × 1200 (6.7%), 1165 × 1165 (8.1%), 1067 × 1067 (11.5%), 1100 × 1100 (14%) and 800 × 1200 (15.2%).

Pallet Dimensions: North America

The 1219 × 1016 mm / 48 × 40 (W x L) is used mainly in groceries. For telecommunications and paint, 1067 ×1067 mm (42 × 42 n) pallets are used. For drums, it is 1219 × 1219 mm (48 × 48 in); for cement and military, the size being used is 1016 × 1219 mm (40 × 48 in).

Beverages use 1219 × 1067 mm (48 × 42 in) pallet sizes, while dairy industries use 1016 × 1016 mm (40 × 40 in). The automotive industry uses 1219 × 1143 mm (48 × 45 in) and the 1118 × 1118 mm (44 × 44 in) is used in drums and chemical industries too.

Pallet Dimensions: Other Industries

The 914 × 914 mm (36 × 36 in) is used in beverages, while the 1219 × 914 (48 × 36 in) is employed for shingles and packaged paper. The 889 × 1156 mm (35 × 45.5 in) is used in military industries. The 1219 × 508 mm (48 x 20 in) is used in retail.

By comparison, the most common sizes are the 800 × 1200 mm (EUR 1), 1200 × 1000 mm (EUR 2), 1000 × 1200 mm (EUR 3) and 800 × 600 (EUR 6). EUR 6 also comes in 600 × 400 and 400 × 300.

Other Common Pallet Dimensions

In the US, the most widely used size is the 48 x 40 inches. In Europe, the 800 x 200 mm is quickly becoming the standard. It is also now being adopted by some US companies.

Some common measurements in centimeters are 1/8 Euro (40 by 30 cm), 1/2 Euro (80 by 60 cm), Euro (80 by 120 cm) and ISO 2 (100 by 120 cm). Other standards being used today are ISO 3676, DIN 15 146, ANSI MH 1.2.2M and ISO 3394. In almost all pallet measurements, the first number is the stringer length.
