How Big is a Football Field

People would often refer to the size of a football field as something that is equivalent to one acre. This actually not a very accurate representation of how big an acre is.

Technically speaking, if you include the two end zones of a football field, an acre will be about seventy-six percent of this. Now, if you take out both end zones, you will have a size that is closer to that of an acre, about ninety-six percent closer.

How Big is a Football Field?

A football field built under the regulations and specifications suitable for American Football measures approximately three hundred and sixty feet long by one hundred and sixty feet wide.

In yards, these dimensions are about 120 by 53.3. These measurements for the length of the football field already include ten yards each for the two end zones.

The goal posts for the American Football field should be at least thirty feet in height while the crossbar should be at least ten feet high.

As for the widths of the goal posts over the crossbar, these should be at the very least eighteen feet and six inches in height from inside to inside.

The length of the ball is also very important in professional American Football. The ball should be anywhere from 10 and 7/8 to 11 and 7/16 in inches.

As for the ball’s circumference, the regulated size is about 20 and 3/4 inches up to 21 and 1/4 inches in the middle; and 27 and 3/4 up to 28 and 1/2 inches for the long axis.

Number of Players

There are basically forty-five active team players for each football team but only eleven players from each team will be playing on the field at a time. Other players watching in the sidelines may be called in to substitute for one or two players on the field.

Players are generally categorized into three classifications: defense, offense and special team.

It is not unusual to have players who never set foot on the field at any given game since a number of these players are reserved only for cases when a particular player on the field has been injured and needs to be replaced.

To start the game, the most common practice to determine which team will kick off at the start of the game, is through a coin toss. This coin toss will likewise determine which team will guard a particular goal post.

For the second half of the game, another coin toss will be done through the aid of the referee.
