Standard Beer Size

The standard beer sizes vary among countries. Beer is sold in bottles and cans, and both naturally have different sizing standards.

Stubby Beer Bottles

These bottles have a capacity ranging from 330 ml (11.6 imp fl oz / 11.2 U.S. fl oz) to 375 ml (13.2 imp fl oz / 12.7 U.S. fl oz). These are smaller than the average bottle and constructed from very thick glass.

These bottles are marketed widely in Europe. In the US the size is barely used anymore. The stubby in Australia has a capacity of 70.4 imp fl oz / 67.6 U.S. fl oz.

De Nederlandse Bierfles

The standard beer size in the Netherlands is 300 ml (10.6 imp fl oz; 10.1 U.S. fl oz). This bottle is known locally as De Nederlandse Bierfles or pijpje.

United Kingdom and the US

In the UK, the standard bottle size is 500 ml. In the United States, the standard is the longneck. This is also called the industry standard bottle (ISB). These bottles may be used 16 times on the average.

The capacity is 341 ml. The longneck has replaced the stubby as the standard in the US. However, it should be noted that the longneck in Australia refers to 700-750 ml bottles.

Larger Bottles

The big bottles in the US are called bombers and they have a capacity of 650.6 ml / 22.9 imp fl oz or 22 U.S. fl oz. The large bottles in Europe have a capacity of 750 milliliters (25 U.S. fl oz; 26 imp fl oz).

The forty is not a standard beer size. It is a term used in the US for 40 U.S fluid ounce/ 1,182.9 milliliter / 41.6 imperial fluid beers. This is three times larger than the typical 12 fl oz. The growler is equal to ½ US gallon glass jug. The growlers are sometimes used instead of kegs when home brewing.

Caguama Bottles

These are Mexican bottles measuring 940 ml (31.8 U.S. fl oz / 33.1 imp fl oz. These bottles are very popular in Pacífico, Victoria and Sol.

Beer Can Sizes

The standard size in the US is 12 U.S. fl oz (355 ml; 12.5 imp fl oz). In many European countries, the average can size is 330 ml (11.6 imp fl oz / 11.2 U.S. fl oz). 330 ml is also the standard in India.

The 500 ml 17.6 imp fl oz / 16.9 U.S. fl oz can is also popular in many European countries. The average size of beer cans in Australia is 375 ml. In South Africa, the beer cans also adapt the 330 ml standard. Some cans there measure 440 ml.

There are also 1000 ml cans in Finland. In terms of diameter, the standard used in the US is just over 65 mm. In Europe it is 52 mm.

These are just some of the standard beer sizes used in various countries around the world. Of course it goes without saying that there are other sizes too. In many instances, beer companies will come out with larger sizes when promoting a new product.
