Gas Pipe Sizing

The following gas pipe sizing measurements are for natural gas pipe lines. These measurements are only for these tube types. Other tubes will have different specifications.

Nominal Size 1.380 to 1 1/2"

A pipe with a nominal size of 1.380” and inside diameter of 0.622” has a capacity of 120 (10 ft), 85 (20 ft), 60 (40 ft), 42 (80 ft) 31 (150 ft) and 22 (300 ft). A pipe with a nominal size of ¾” has an inside diameter of 0.824”. The capacity is 272 (10 ft), 192 (20 ft), 136 for 40 ft, 96 for 80 ft long pipes, 70 for 150 ft pipes and 60 for 300 ft long pipes.

Other gas pipe sizing specifications are as follows: a pipe with a nominal size 1” and an inside diameter of .049” has capacities of 547 (10 ft), 387 (20 ft), 273 (40 ft), 193 (80 ft), 141 (150 ft) and 100 (300 ft).

Pipes with a nominal size of 1 ¼” have an inside diameter of 1.380 and capacities of 1200 (10 ft), 849 (20 ft), 600 (40 ft), 424 (80 ft), 310 (150 ft) and 219 (20 ft). Pipes with a 1 ½” nominal size and 1.610” inside diameter have the following capacities: 1860 (10 ft), 1316 (20 ft), 930 (40 ft), 658 (80 ft), 480 (150 ft) and 340 (300 ft).

Gas Pipes 2” Nominal Size to 3"

If the gas pipe sizing specs are 2” (nominal) and 2.067” (inside diameter), the capacities are 3759 (10 ft), 2658 (20 ft), 1880 (40 ft), 1330 (80 ft), 971 (150 ft) and 686 (300 ft). A pipe with a nominal size of 2 1/2” and an inside diameter of 2.469” has a capacity of 6169 (10 ft), 4362 (20 ft), 3084 (40 ft), 2189 (80 ft), 1593 (150 ft) and 1126 (300 ft).

A pipe with a nominal size of 3” has an inside diameter of 3.068”. The capacity also depends on the length: 11225 (10 ft), 7938 (20 ft), 5613 (40 ft), 3969 (80 ft), 2898 (150 ft) and 2049 (300 ft).

Nominal Size 4" and Up

A pipe with a 4” nominal size and 4.026” inside diameter has the following capacities: 23479 (10 ft), 16602 (20 ft), 11740 (40 ft), 8301 (80 ft), 6062 (150 ft) and 4287 (300 ft).

Other gas pipe sizing specs that are used are pipes with a nominal size of 5” and 5.047” inside diameter. The capacities are 42945 (10 ft), 30367 (20 ft), 21473 (40 ft), 15183 (80 ft), 11088 (150 ft) and 7841 (300 ft)

A pipe with a nominal size of 6” and an inside diameter of 6.065” has capacities of 69671 (10 ft), 49265 (20 ft), 34836 (40 ft), 24632 (80 ft), 17989 (150 ft) and 12720 (300 ft).

A pipe with an 8” nominal size and an inside diameter of 7.981” has the following capacities: 141832 (10 ft), 100290 (20 ft), 70916 (40 ft), 50145 (80 ft), 36621 (150 ft) and 25895 (300 ft).

Finally, it should be noted that these gas pipe sizing measurements cannot be applied for copper tubing; they have different specs.
