The biggest office in the world is the Pentagon, which is the headquarters of the United States Defense Department. It occupies 3.7 million square feet. The building is in Arlington, Virginia. There are currently 25,000 employees working there. 

Facts and Figures 

The Pentagon is double the size of Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The National Capitol can fit in one of the five sections of the Pentagon. Its floor space is three times that of the Empire State Building. 

Its employees go past 200 acres of lawn. There are 16 parking lots where 8,770 cars are parked. The offices take up 3,705,793 square feet. 

People working at the biggest office in the world drink 6,800 soft drinks, 1,700 pints of milk and 4,500 cups of coffee daily. There are 691 water fountains and 284 restrooms. The restaurant has 230 persons staffing it. There is an outdoor snack bar, a dining room, 6 snack bars and two cafeterias. 

Everyday 200,000 telephone calls are conducted through 100,000 miles of cable. Over 1,200,000 pieces of mail are coursed through its post office every month. The Army Library has 1,700 periodicals and 300,000 publications. 

Numbers

There are 131 stairways, 19 escalators, 13 elevators and 672 fire hose cabinets in the Pentagon. The biggest office has 7,000 electric clock outlets and 4,200 clocks. The light fixtures number 16,250. 

There are 7,754 windows and 250 lamp replacements are made everyday. The glass area takes up 309,276 square feet or 7.1 acres. A million emails are sent daily. 

Land Area and Cost 

The total land area in acres is 583. 296 acres of these are owned by the government. 287 acres are purchased and the land cost is $2,245,000. The part covered by the Pentagon building is 29 acres. If the courtyard is included it will be 34 acres. 

The center courtyard area is 5 acres. The section covered by the refrigeration plant and heating is one acre. The sewage structures take up an acre too. There are 30 miles of access highways constructed for it.

The bridges and overpasses constructed for it are 21. The Pentagon building cost $49,600,000. The parking lot encompasses 67 acres. The cost of the entre project is $85,000,000. The net space for storage, offices and concessions is 3,705,793 square feet. 

Each outer wall is 921 feet long. The building is 77 feet 3.5 inches high. The cubic contents are 77,015,000 cu ft. There are 7 floors, including the basement and mezzanine. The entire length of the corridors is 17.5 miles. While there are 17.5 miles of corridors, it takes less than 8 minutes to go between any two points. 

Construction 

The Pentagon was made in the early 1940s as World War II began. To prepare the area, 41,492 concrete piles and 5.5 million cubic yards of earth were used. 

To build the biggest office in the world, 680,000 tons of gravel and sand were used. These were processed into 430,000 cubic yards of concrete. The Pentagon was finished on January 15 1943, 16 months after the project began.
