Mattress measurements may slightly differ from one continent to the next, but the differences are only about a few centimeters making them barely noticeable. The noticeable difference in measurements actually occurs when you get one specific mattress size and compare this with another mattress size.

What this means is that if you get a single bed in the UK, and you are used to sleeping on a single bed made in the US, the difference is only three inches in width. Single beds from both countries are 75 inches in length.

If you get a single bed manufactured in Australia, there is also not that much difference in width. A single bed in Australia is approximately 3 and ½ inches narrower but it also has the same length size as mattresses from the US and the UK.

Comparing Mattress Measurements

A double or full bed in the US basically measures 54 inches in width by 75 inches in length. UK and Australian sizes for the same mattress is also 54 inches by 75 inches.

However, in Continental Europe, a full or double bed is about 55 inches in width by 79 inches in length; giving you a difference of an inch in width and 4 inches in length when compared to similar mattresses made in the US, UK and Australia.

A queen-sized bed in the US and Australia likewise have the same dimensions. These are basically around 60 inches in width by 80 inches in length. In the UK, this bed size is approximately 60 inches in width by 78 inches in length while in Continental Europe, this one measures 63 inches wide and 79 inches long.

From here, you can see the Continental Europe has the biggest standard queen mattress both in width and length.

Finally, a king-sized mattress in Australia and the UK has similar dimensions, at 72 inches wide and 80 inches long while in the US, a king-sized mattress 72 inches wide by 84 inches long while Continental Europe has dimensions of 79 inches wide by 79 inches long for a king mattress.

Each specific type of bedding item whether this is a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, comforter or duvet comes in specific dimensions made especially for each type of mattress.
