Lighting Console Dimensions

Lighting console dimensions are as varied as the features of these devices. Some lighting consoles measure 4.5 x 19.7 x 13.4 inches (H x W x D), while others are 4.5 x 28.2 x 3.4 inches. Other products measure 6.5 x 5.8 x 20.3 inches. There are also consoles that measure 6.5 x 39.9 x 6.5 inches.

Overview

The lighting console is a piece of equipment employed for managing several lights. They are used in theater, film and throughout the entertainment industry. These are also known as lighting desk, lighting board or lightboard. The lighting console is almost always set in the control booth or the FOH (Front of House).

Basic Features

Regardless of the lighting console dimensions, it can control dimmers. The dimmers are responsible for the light intensity. Majority of the new consoles also have auto lighting control. These are lights that move and switch colors.

Many of these consoles also have fog / smoke effects, hazers and other special effects. The consoles interact with these devices via a control protocol. The most widely used protocol is DMX-512. Older standards like 0-10 V is still used sometimes. Newer protocols like DMX-512-A and ACN are now being used in the entertainment industry.

The complexity of these consoles varies greatly. But while the lighting console dimensions and designs differ, their role is still unchanged. They are used to organize lights so they are easier to handle. They allow a lighting designer to make adjustments easily. The following are some of the types available.

Preset Boards

These are basic consoles and used in small setups. These consist of fader banks (at least two of them) known as scenes. These are not as advanced as digital consoles but for small installations, preset boards are sufficient. These are used mostly by DJs.

Memory Consoles

These are used in theaters and other large installations. This controller has taken the place of preset consoles as controllers. Memory consoles are most useful for productions where the scenes do not alter after each show.

Moving Light Controllers

These are more advanced than memory consoles. They can handle luminares through the dimmers. These also have controls for the intelligent fixtures. They also have an LCD or LED display.

Apart from the lighting console dimensions, the other specs like DMX channels, scenes and grab master have to be considered as well. The power supply, page freeze, chases, stacks and fader channels wide mode have to be assessed too.
