Saltwater Aquarium Dimensions

If you are a do it yourself aquarist then most likely you’d be unsatisfied with thesaltwateraquarium saltwater aquariums you find sold in stores. Those who would like to venture into building their own tanks will need some patience and work on precision construction. The beauty of it all comes in being able to choose the saltwater aquarium dimensions.

Basic Model

The basic model of a saltwater tank is of course the cheapest one to build. It mainly consists of your standard water tank and lid. You can add other peripherals like external decor, filtration unit, and/or lighting. You can make other additions to the basic design after you have built the tank according to your desired saltwater aquarium dimensions.

Basic Materials

The commercial aquariums that you can find sold in stores are mainly made up of glued glass and silicone joints. Tanks made of these materials can usually hold up to 500 liters of water. You should consider that volume of water as a model to which you will specify your saltwater aquarium dimensions considering the materials you would be using.

However, if you want to get a saltwater tank that is larger then you should choose another type of material to construct your aquarium. For saltwater aquarium dimensions that can hold more than 500 liters of water you should construct your tank using polyester resin or even cement. Given this design, you should only have the front part of your aquarium to be made of glass.

Possible Dimensions

Now, let’s say you are just out to construct your tank out of basic materials, which is glass and silicone joints then we have several possible aquarium sizes having 500 liters as the maximum amount of water volume. We’ve come up with the following saltwater aquarium dimensions that you can choose from depending on the amount of space you have available.

500 Liter Tank: With 500 liters as your gross volume, the length, width, and height of your basic rectangular tank would be 2 x 0.5 x 0.5 meters.

375 Liter Tank: This is your second largest option if you don’t have that much space for a 500 liter aquarium. Its dimensions/measurements are 1.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 meters.

270 Liter Tank: Dimensions/measurements are 1.2 x 0.45 x 0.5 meters.

200 Liter Tank: Dimensions are 1 x 0.4 x 0.5 meters.

144 Liter Tank: Dimensions of this aquarium are 0.8 x 0.4 .045 meters.

96 Liter Tank: This is the smallest aquarium size that we can recommend. The saltwater aquarium dimensions are 0.8 x 0.3 x 0.4 meters.

From here on you should consider the amount of space you have available, whatever visual impact you may want to have, location of the nearest power outlet, distance of your water source/tap water, and other practical considerations.
