STP Cable Dimensions

STP cable dimensions and lengths range from 3 ft, 20 ft, 100 ft, and some are a thousand feet long. Often, the STP cable type to be set up will depend on what it will be used for.

Facts about STP Cables

STP stands for shielded twisted pair cables. The cabling components include the metal covering every individual pair of copper wires. This kind of covering shields the cable from external EMI (electromagnetic interferences). The STP cable types are Cat 5, Cat 5e and Cat 6.

Application

These cables are most suitable for areas that suffer from or are vulnerable to interference. The interference can range from electromagnetic sources, radio and more. The larger STP cable dimensions are designed for large environments.

These cables are also suitable for places that are sensitive to electrical current. An example of this would be laboratories. High security buildings with various types of equipment will also benefit from using an STP cable. However, they are more expensive than UTP cables.

Other Shielded Cables Similar to STP

The shielding that STP provides protects the cable from various interferences like the 150 ohm shielded twisted pair cables utilized for token ring networks.

The S/UTP (screened unshielded twisted pair) is also called the fully shielded twisted pair (FTP). Like the STP cable dimensions, this one is available in different sizes. This is actually a screened UTP cable (ScTP).

The screened shielded pair (S/FTP or S/STP) is also called screened fully shielded twisted pair (S/FTP). They have an individual shield like STP. However, they also have an outer steel shielding.

This covers the whole pack of shielded copper pairs. It is this type of cabling that offers the best guard against external interference. This also gets rids of alien crosstalk.

It should be noted that manufacturers employ various types of terminologies for STP. Although these cables have different properties, STP, S/UTP, S/STP and STP-A are used interchangeably.

Other Types of Cables

The UTP cables are usually employed for university networks. Among the large area cables, the UTP cables are the most affordable. The coaxial cables are used in residential homes. Fiber optic cables offer the largest data capacity among all existing cables.

Aside from knowing the STP cable dimensions, it also helps if you are aware of the other types of cables. Once you have decided you want the STP cable, you can now focus on the specific cable length and type you need.
