Rug Sizes
When determining the correct rug dimensions, keep it mind that handmade
rugs need at least 2 ft (60 cm) of open space on its sides. This will make it stand out like a painting.
Standard Rug Sizes
The most common sizes are: 2′ x 3′, 2′ x 4′, 3′ x 5′, 4′ x 6′, 5′ x 8′ and 6′ x 9′. Also widely used are the following: 7′ x 10′, 8′ x 10′, 9′ x 12′, 10′ x 13′, 10′ x 14′ and 12′ x 15′. Other common sizes are the 12′ x 18′, the 13′ x 20′ and the 14′ x 21′.
The following are the sizes in the metric system (width x length in meters): 0.50 x 1.00, 1.00 x 1, 1.50 x 2.00, 1.50 x 2.50, 2.00 x 2.50 and 2.00 x 3.00. Other common sizes are 2.25 x 3.25, 2.50 x 3.50, 2.75 x 3.75 and 3.00 x 4.00. The 3.50 x 4.50, 3.00 x 5.00, 3.50 x 5.50, 4.00 x 6.00 and 4.00 x 7.00 are also common.
Rug Sizes: Rectangular
The rectangular rug is the most widely used in the US. The dimensions cited above are often applied to rectangular rugs. However, those are not precise sizes. For example, an 8 x 4” is still called the 8 x 10.
There are also large rugs available. These are called oversized and measure 14 x 24 ft (which is equal to 4.00 x 7.00 m). The two measuring systems described earlier are widely used. Regardless of your location, one of the two (or both) will likely be used by the rug manufacturer.
Rug Sizes: Round
The round rugs are measured by diameter. Common sizes are 4 x 4 and 8 x 8. These rugs are available in a variety of designs, depending on their origin or source of inspiration. Some of the oldest rugs are found in Egypt, bearing geometric patterns.
Also popular are rugs with the French Aubusson style. The Chinese rugs also have unique and distinct looks. There are also Persian rugs that are circular in shape. While the sizes vary, the designs are mostly medallion. In Iran, various round rugs are produced, notably in Tabriz and Nain.
Rug Sizes: Runners
Runners are the next most common after rectangular. Usually they measure 2.5 x 3 ft wide. In terms of length they range from 6 ft to 20 ft. These rugs are utilized along hallways and stairways. They are also employed along entrances. Dubbed corridor rugs, runners are more popular in the United States than in Europe.
The runners used for entrances tend to be wider than the ones used for stairways. Runners remain popular in rooms and homes with a Persian motif. In Person living rooms, a runner known as the Kellegi is set at the room’s head.
The Kellegi is usually 4 to 6 feet wide. Its length is about three times that. On its sides are placed two other runners 2.5 to 5 ft wide and 40 long.
There are other rug sizes and shapes available. Squares, ovals and octagonal rugs can now be purchased, each with unique designs.
