I've got a little Romahome camper with the ubiquitous never-gets-cold-enough absorption fridge that can run on gas. I'd like to sling this out and replace it with a proper motor driven fridge. The big problem is finding a proper fridge that has similar dimensions to the caravan fridge. So far I've discovered a Proline PMF70 which is close but if anyone knows of one that might be a better fit I'd be glad to know. 12 volt or 240 volt doesn't really matter as nowadays inverters are fairly cheap.

I have a 36" wide space for a new refrigerator - wall on one side, cabinet on the other. Is there any requirement regarding space left on either side, or can I use a refrigerator up to 35.75" wide?

Hi,
I am looking for a refrigerator that is not too deep (under 24"), but I need one that is larger than an under-the-counter. Preferably 10 cubic feet or more. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?

Thank you

Couple nits. NON "built in" only.

1) There are two heights you must consider. Case height (The case is the steel shell) and hinge height.
If you have a cabinet above and it is less than ~20" deep you really only have to worry about case height.
If you have the full depth cabinets about 24"+ you have to worry about the hinges in the front.
2) There are 4 basic widths (of the space you have not your refrigerator) 28", 30", 33", 36". Note a 35-1/2"wide and a 35-3/4" wide are both meant for the same 36" wide space.
3) Top freezers over 33" W are rare as heck. The only one I know of is a (very expensive for a top freezer) GE Profile.
4) Extinct Sizes (by no means complete)
There used to be a case about 36"w x 67" tall. There are alot of houses built around this case no longer available size.
99% of 32" wide are gone. (exception a few freezerless fridges and matching freezers that total out at 64" wide)
34" wide are gone.
5) "foreign" makes LG, Samsung, Bosch (GE's built by Samsung). Watch out the doors swing out wide and can be a problem if against a wall on one side where the wall extends past where the door hinges.
5a) "domestic" makes, Whirlpool and Kindrid, GE etc have much less swing out on the hinges.

Hi Rob,

I have a 15 year old GE Profile fridge, (Side by Side) I need a new shelf as the plastic is cracked and broken on one. The fridge has inside it the model number TPX24PRY/TPX24BRY. When we bought it we paid extra to get one that was not so deep. It is 36" wide, 70" Tall and, as best I can measure, about 27" deep with the doors on.

Trying to get this shelf is proving a nightmare as GE is telling me it's no longer available. There seem to be dozens of other companies out there that do have parts but their model numbers all have extra letters on the end. For example TPX24BRYAWW.

They all have diagrams, I can see the shelf, but how do I tell if it is the right size for my fridge? Because I know there was a deeper model and if I buy that shelf it won't fit. All the customer service reps can't seem to sort it out.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rob,

Yes it is difficult to shop for a fridge by dimensions. Usually, manufacturers and stores don't consider exact dimensions as important informations for customers. Normally the just categorize their fridges into several categories, like 2-doors, 4-doors, mid-size, small-size, etc. This would leave the only option is to pick a random guess and then look at the technical detail sheet to see its dimensions. I know it's not practical :)

And a bad news for you, today's mid-size fridge have at least 68" of height. It's very difficult to find one below that number, unless you want to go for a fridge which is smaller in size and capacity.

How the heck do you shop by dimension? I have an old house and the space for the fridge is pretty small (63" tall x 32" wide) depth is not as important. Our current fridge is 17.0 cubic feet. We barely have enough room for everything right now, so I don't want to go any smaller, but everything I've looked at for 17 cubic feet is over 63" tall and I can't find a website that lets me search by dimension. Any suggestions? I've spent hours looking online to no avail.

Hi,
each manufacturers have different models and dimensions. And one model in country A might be a bit different than in country B. It might be helpful if you state your country and your preferred manufacturer :-)

I need to replace it with another fridge but finding a fridge that will fit that space is going to be difficult any ideas you could help with would be much appreciated. Thanks.
