Pitchfork Dimensions

The pitchfork dimensions differ depending on the manufacturer. There are some models that are 7.5 by 4.0 by 42.9 inches (W x D x L). The dimensions though, particularly the length, can vary.

Facts about the Pitchfork

The pitchfork is a tool used in agriculture. They are typically used for handling manure, straw, hay and other materials. Indeed, one of the most common ways the pitchfork is used is to pitch hay. These tools are also used in gardens.

The design may differ, but all pitchforks have several forked tines at the end of the handle. The number of tines on the pitchfork may differ per model.

Design

Aside from the different pitchfork dimensions, the tine design and number of tines vary. The numbers usually range from two to six. The spacing may vary among pitchforks too. The tines can be curved or straight.

Most of these tines are thick so it can be used for heavy duty work. Just like other farming and agricultural tools, the pitchfork is made with a removable head. This means one can replace the handle if it is getting worn down.

This feature allows the user to use shorter or longer handles if needed. By changing the handle length, one can pick the handle they are most comfortable with.

How to Replace Pitchfork Handles

Required Tools

  • Hacksaw
  • Wrench
  • Nuts
  • Washers
  • Threaded 3-inch flat-head bolts
  • Rubber mallet
  • Replacement handle
  • Steel-cutting drill bits
  • Drill
  • Work gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Bench vise

Step 1

Set the pitchfork neck in a vise with the tips down. Rotate the handle clockwise. Drill the rivet center on the pitchfork neck. Drill all the way to the neck and pitch fork handle.

Step 2

Hold the broken handle and pull it. Put the new handle in place. Use the rubber mallet to tap the handle’s end in the neck.

Step 3

Drill the holes in the handle where the holes are in the pitchfork neck. Put the threaded 3-inch flat-head bolts in the holes. The thread should be oriented towards you.

Put the nuts and washers on the bolts’ ends. Secure the nuts with a wrench. Slice off the excessive bolt threads over the nuts using the hacksaw. Remove the pitchfork off the bench vise. Assuming the installation is correct, the pitchfork will now work properly.

The different pitchfork dimensions give you several choices. But whichever you select, ensure you take good care of it. If the handle ever needs to be replaced, just follow the guidelines described earlier.
