Pedal Brake Dimensions

Every automobile comes with at least two to four pedals, each of which performs a specific function to make the vehicle move. These foot-operated devices include the gas, the clutch and the footrest. In addition to these three important components, a vehicle is definitely not complete without the pedal brake. The primary purpose of this device is to slow down or even stop a vehicle in motion. Additionally, there are many other things to learn about this all-important component such as the pedal brake dimensions.

The Dimensions of a Pedal Brake

A pedal brake is made up of an offset bar, which on one end has a footpad attached on it. The entire length of this device is close to 15 inches long. Meanwhile, the size of the footpad varies depending on the model of the vehicle. Most cars have footpads that measure close to 2.76 inches high and 5.12 inches wide.

Aside from this size, some brake pedals made out of aluminum measure 2.5 inches high and 4.25 inches wide. The dimensions of some ISO-pedal brakes are 6.5 inches by 9 inches by 1 inch. In automatic transmission vehicles, you can easily find footpads that measure close to 4.5 inches by 2.5 inches.

Additional Facts and Other Interesting Details

The brake system is definitely one of the most important parts of a vehicle. It functions by preventing an automobile from accelerating. Friction is used in the process, which is necessary to transform kinetic energy to heat. Many vehicles have friction brakes, which store heat within the disc brake or drum brake. Gradually, the heat is then released into the air.

In addition to the heat produced by brakes, they can also transform kinetic energy into acoustic energy. This is the main reason behind the noise pollution associated with the use of brakes. Several factors affect the noise that brakes produce such as the magnitude of the deceleration, road surface as well as tire construction. These are also the reasons why brakes eventually wear out.

There are two main types of friction brakes, namely the disc brake and the drum brake. The first device works by preventing or slowing the road wheel from rotating. This specific type of friction brake is commonly made from ceramic or cast iron. On the other hand, the drum brake works using brake shoes, which are pressed right onto the rotating drum’s inner surface.

Besides the disc brake and the drum brake, there is also the electronic brake. Unlike friction brakes, this one makes use of electromagnetic induction. The resistance created by this brake system is converted into electricity or heat, which in turn causes the moving vehicle to slow down.
