The standard diameter of golf holes is 4.25 inches, which was set by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews in 1891. The rules that were issued during that time standardized the size of golf holes all over the world. In 1829, a hole cutter was invented at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club in Scotland. The standard size of golf holes was patterned from the initial result of this cutter. Since the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews adopted it, other golf courses soon followed.
