UFO sizes can be difficult to judge as they’re often seen at a distance. Nevertheless, reports indicate the dimensions differ. Some report seeing unidentified flying objects the size of Volkswagens while others are as big as 747s.

The Cigar Shaped UFO

This incident took place on July 1947 aboard the Llandoverg Castle steamship as it was traversing the Straits of Madagascar. Around midnight the passengers became aware of a bright light passing overhead. It hovered 50 ft above the water and shone a light on the sea.

The light disappeared and the object appeared. Witnesses reported the UFO size to be 1,000 ft long and 200 ft wide. It resembled a cigar except the ends were chipped. There were no windows or openings. It moved along the steamship for a minute. Then it rose into the air and disappeared.

The Torpedo Shaped UFO

On Nov 2, 1957, Texas patrolman AJ Fowler got a call from a farmer named Pedro Saucedo. Saucedo said he was driving his truck along Route 116 when he saw lightning strike a field. Together with his four friends, they saw a torpedo shaped UFO emerge from the spot.

The object was about 200 ft long. The thing passed over his truck, causing the vehicle to tremble. Fowler dismissed the report until five other people called him and reported seeing the same thing. They all said the UFO size was 200 ft and looked like a torpedo.

The UFO over Alaska

On November 17th in 1986, a Japanese airliner was headed to Alaska. It was half past six in the evening when Captain Kenju Terauchi called the control tower. He reported yellow lights up ahead. The lights disappeared and Terauchi noticed a walnut shaped UFO behind the plane.

The UFO was at least 300 feet long. He reported this to the control tower which sent a couple of planes in the airliner’s direction. By the time the planes arrived, the UFO had vanished.

The New Mexico UFO

Around 5:00 PM on December 8, 1981, Dan Luscomb saw a UFO fly over the skies of Reserve, New Mexico. He said the UFO size was 600 ft long. This report was forwarded to the Center for UFO Studies. Its head, Dr. Allen J. Hynek went to the site and discovered four more witnesses who saw the craft.

They all reported the same size. Hynek also learned from the witnesses that a fighter jet was following the UFO. But whenever the jet would come close, the UFO would pull away. In spite of the object’s size, it was able to maneuver and move at incredible speeds.

Getting Accurate Figures

To get a better idea of the size of these objects, investigators now use special cameras that can determine the object’s dimensions. The photos taken at Gulf Breeze (a known UFO hotspot) revealed some of the UFOs there were about 30 m in diameter.

Again, UFO sizes are extremely difficult to gauge. Aside from the distance, the accuracy of the report is hard to verify. Because the event occurs unexpectedly, the individual or individuals may not be in a position to gauge the object’s dimensions.

Satellite Dimensions: Sputnik 1 (Soviet Union)

Launched on October 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 had a mass of 83.6 kg (184.3 lb). The semimajor axis was 6,955.2 km (4,321.8 mi). It had 1,440 orbits and had an eccentricity of 0.05201 degrees. Its inclination was 65.1 degrees and had an orbital period of 96.2 minutes.

The apoapsis was 7,310 km (4,540 mi) from the center. From the surface it was 939 km (583 mi). The periapsis was 6,586 km (4,092 mi) from the center and 215 km (134 mi) from the surface.

Sputnik’s mission was to study the atmosphere. The Sputnik burned up on 4 January 1958 as it reentered the Earth’s atmosphere.

Satellite Dimensions: Explorer 1 (US)

The Explorer 1 had a mass of 13.97 kg (30.80 lb), with a semimajor axis of 7,832.2 km (4,866.6 miles). The eccentricity was .139849 and the inclination was 33.24 degrees. It had 56,000 orbits with an apoapsis of 2,550 km (1,585 miles).

The periapsis was 358 km (222 miles). The Explorer was launched on February 1, 1958 for Earth science studies. Transmission ended on May 23, 1958. The Explorer I made its return to Earth on March 31, 1970.

Both the Explorer 1 and the Sputnik 1 made significant contributions to science. However they are best known for being products of the space race that emerged during the Cold War.

Satellite Dimensions: Prospero (UK)

Launched on October 28, 1971, the Prospero is the last satellite to be propelled by a UK satellite. The mass is 66 kg and has an inclination of 82 degrees. The orbital period is 104.4 minutes and the apoapsis is 1,402 kilometers (871 mi). The periapsis is 531 kilometers (330 mi).

Its original name was Puck but was changed to Prospero after the announcement it would be the last. The device was launched from Woomera, South Australia using a Black Arrow rocket. The satellite was built to study micrometeorites. Although it was turned off in 1996, transmission was still audible at 137.560 MHz (as of 2006).

Satellite Dimensions: Rohini (India)

The Rohini refers to several experimental satellites. The first was the RTP launched on 1979-08-10 and had a mass of 30 kg. The next one was the RS-1 which also had a mass of 35 kg. It utilized 16 W and had an orbit of 305 x 919 km. Its lifespan was 1 year and 8 months.

The RS-D1 had a mass of 38 kg and was launched on 1981-05-31. However the satellite did not attain the desired height. It stayed in orbit for only nine days. The RS-D2 weighed 41.5 kg and had 16 W of power. It was launched on 1983-04-17 and returned to the Earth’s atmosphere on 1990-04-19.

As the years have gone by, the space / astronomical satellite dimensions have changed and become more powerful. However, their purpose remains the same; to broaden man’s knowledge of the cosmos and Earth.

Standing at second place are the citizens of Denmark. The Danish average 6’ or 1.83 meters. They are so close in height to the Dutch that some argue the Danes are in fact taller. America’s Decline in Stature (Literally)

Americans used to be the tallest people by country. Today the average American is only 5’10” tall. The average American male ranks only 9th in the list of tallest peoples; women are even lower at 15th place. Both are dwarfed by many European nations.

Height is believed to indicate the overall health and prosperity of a nation. As riches increase, so does a people’s average stature. But researchers believe that Americans lost their standing as the tallest people in the world, not due to lack of food but poor diet. Indeed, the life expectancy of the average American declined at the same time as the height average. Americans now rank between 28 and 38 in the world in terms of expected lifespan, behind many other developed countries. While Americans are no longer the world’s tallest people, they rank high among the heaviest.

Tallest People – Individuals

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest person on earth was Robert Wadlow, an American. He was 8’11” tall. Wadlow’s unusual height was due to hypertrophy of the pituitary gland. Wadlow died at age 22. The tallest woman in the world was a Dutch lasy named Trijntje Keever. She was 8’4” tall and died at 17.
