The basic carpet sizes are small, medium and large. However the dimensions need to be more precise if you want exact fittings.

Basic Carpet Measurements

The small, medium and large sizes used by manufacturers are not standardized. However, it isn’t unusual for small sizes to be up 2 sq m (21 sq ft). Medium is only up to 3.5 sq m (38 sq ft). Most medium large sizes don’t go beyond 5 sq m (54 sq ft). The large sizes are for surfaces measuring up to 5 sq m to 8 sq m (54 sq ft to 86 sq ft).

How to Find the Right Carpet Size

This is for room sizes and the measurements are in feet. For rooms measuring 12 x 9, the cut should be 12 x 9 (12 sq yards). For 12 x 10-6, the cut size should be 12 x 10-6 (14 sq yards). If the room is 12 x 11-3, the cut size is 12 x 11-3 (15 sq yards). For 12 x 12, the cut size is 12 x 12 (16 sq yards).

For a room size measuring 12 x 13-6, 12 x 13-6 cut size is ideal. The square yardage should be 18. The 12 x 14 room is made for 12 x 14 cut size and 18-2/3 sq yards.

Carpet Sizes for Other Rooms

For 13 x 13 rooms, the cut size is 12 x 15 (20 sq yd); for 13 x 15 it is 12 x 17 cut size and 22-2/3 sq yd. Other measurements: 13 x 17 (12 x 20 cut size, 26-2/3 sq yd), 13 x 20 (12 x 26 cut size, 34-2/3) and for 14 x 14 (12 x 17 cut size, 22-2/3 sq yd).

For 14 x 16 room size (12 x 20 cut size, 26-2/3 sq yd); 14 x 20 (12 x 28 cut size, 37-1/3), 14 x 28 (12 x 34 cut size, 45-1/3 sq yards).

Larger Carpet Sizes

For 15 x 16 rooms, the cut size is 12 x 20 and the sq yd 26-2/3; for 15 x 20 (12 x 26 cut size, 34-2/3 sq yd); 15 x 22 (12 x 30 cut size, 40 sq yd); 16 x 16 (12 x 22-6 cut size, 30 sq yd). 16 x 21 room sizes need 12 x 28 cut size (37-1/3 sq yd) and 16 x 25 a cut size of 12 x 34 45-1/3 sq yards.

For 17 x 20 rooms, the cut size is 12 x 29 (38-2/3 sq yd); 17 x 22 (cut size 12 x 34; 45-1/3 sq yd); 17 x 24 (cut size 12 x 34 45-1/3); 17 x 29 (cut size 12 x 43; 57-1/3 sq yd).

For 18 x 21 rooms the cut size is 12 x 32 with 42-2/3 sq yd; 18 x 24 (12 x 36 cut size; 48 sq yd). For 18 x 30 rooms, the cut size 12 x 45 is ideal and 60 sq yards.

When choosing carpet sizes, adding 10% to the size is a good idea. This will make it easier to create patterns.
