The following cargo dimensions are employed in many services around the world. Bear in mind that the exact figures may deviate a bit depending on the company that makes them.

Cargo Container Size: the Standard 20’ and 40’

The inner dimensions of the 20’ are 19’4" L x 7’8" W x 7’10" H (5.89 m x 2.33 m x 2.38 m). The door dimensions are 7’8" W x 7’6" H (2.33 m x 2.28 m). The capacity of the 20’ is 1,172 sq ft (or 33.18 m3). The tare weight is 4,916 lb (2,229 kg). The maximum cargo is 47,999 lb (about 1,727 kg).

The standard 40’ has a capacity of 2,390 sq ft (67.67 m3). The tare weight is 8,160 lb or 3,701 kg. The load maxes out at 59,040 lb (26,780 kg). The inner dimensions are 39’5" L x 7’8" W x 7’10" H (12.01 m x 2.33 m x 2.38 m). The door is 7’8" / 2.33 m wide and 7’6"/ 2.28 m high.

Cargo Container Size: the Open Tops

The open top 20’ inner dimensions are 19’4" L x 7’7" W x 7’8" H (5.89 m x 2.31 m x 2.33 m). The door is 7’6" wide by 7’2" high (2.28 m x 2.18 m). The cargo limit is 47,620 lb / 21,600 kg. The tare weight is 5,280 lb / 2,394 kg. The capacity is 1,136 sq ft. The open top 40’ specs are 39’5" x 7’8" x 7’8" (12.01 m x 2.33 m x 2.33 m; L x W x H).

The door is 7’8" wide and 7’5" high (that’s 2.33 m x 2.26 m). The open top 40’ capacity is 2,350 sq ft (about 66.54 m3). The tare weight is 8,490 lb (3,850 kg). The cargo limit is set at 58,710 lb (equal to 6,630 kg)

Cargo Container Size: Reefers and Flat Racks

The reefer 20’ measures 17’8" x 7’5" x 7’5" (5.38 m x 2.26 m x 2.26 m; L x W x H). The capacity is 1,000 sq ft (28.31 m3). The door measures 7’5" x 7’3" (2.26 m x 2.20 m; W x H).

The cargo limit is 45,760 lb (20,756 kg). The flat rack 20’ measures 18’5" x 7’3" x 7’4" (5.61 m x 2.20 m x 2.20 m; L x W x H). The tare weight is 5,578 lbs (or 2,530 kg). The maximum cargo is 47,333 lb or 1,469 kg.

Cargo Container Size: Collapsible Flat Racks and Platforms

The platform 20’ is 19’11" long, 8’0" wide and 7’4" high (6.07 m x 2.43 m x 2.23 m). The maximum cargo is 52,896 lb (23,993 kg). The platform 40’ is 40’0" long, 8’0" wide and 6’5" high (12.19 m x 2.43 m x 1.95 m).

The tare weight is 12,783 lb (5,798 kg). The cargo limit is 66,397 lb (30,117 kg). The flat rack collapsible 20’ measures 18’6" x 7’3" x 7’4". The cargo capacity is 61,117 lb. The tare weight is 6,061 lb (2,749 kg).

These cargo container sizes are among the most widely utilized. However, other companies rely on custom made storage devices to carry goods.
