Cabin luggage sizes allowed in airlines vary, as there is no international standard. However, the IATA (International Air Transport Association) has set down recommendations (not mandatory) for airlines. The IATA specifications are as follows.

The IATA Cabin Baggage Limits

The hand luggage should be no more than 10 in (25 cm) deep, 22 in (56 cm) long and 18 in (46 cm) wide. The total dimensions must not go beyond 45 in (110 cm). The total size includes the pockets and handles.

However, other airlines allow only a single bag with maximum measurements of 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. The maximum weight varies between 5 kg to 12 kg.

Other Cabin Luggage Sizes

At Austrian Airlines, the maximum size allowed is 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm (one bag only). The maximum weight is 8 kg. At Virgin Atlantic, the maximum bag dimensions are 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm (one bag). The weight limit is 6 kg.

Swiss International allows one bag measuring 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. The maximum weight is 8 kg. The plane also allows some hand items to be carried. The bag weight limit at RyanAir is 10 kg. The maximum bag size allowed is 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.

Maximum Cabin Luggage Sizes Allowed at Malaysia Airlines and Other Flights

At Malaysia Airlines, one bag is allowed. The weight limit is 5 kg and the size limit is 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm. At Malev Hungarian Airlines, the maximum weight is 10 kg. The size limit is 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.

One bag is allowed at Lufthansa with a maximum weight of 8 kg. The bag can be no more than 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. The maximum size for foldable garment bags is 57 cm x 54 cm x 15 cm.

At Jet Airways, the maximum bag size allowed is 50 cm x 45 cm x 20 cm (ATTR aircraft) or 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm (Boeing/Airbus). Only one bag is allowed with a maximum weight of 7 kg.

Flybe allows one bag weighing 10 kg max. The maximum dimensions are 50 cm x 35 cm x 23 cm. At EasyJet the bag size limit is 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. There is no weight limit.

At British Airways one bag is allowed plus one laptop bag. The bag size limit is 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. At BMIBaby, a single bag is allowed. The maximum weight is 10 kg. The size is limited to 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.

At Air Berlin the maximum weight is 6 kg. For laptops the weight limit is 8 kg. The maximum weight limit is 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.

The cabin luggage size limit can change, so it is best if you confirm with the airline first. The way the baggage is inspected also varies per company.
